Christmas Cards

Christmas Cards

After spending a nice Thanksgiving with family, I’m ready to get back to card making.  Shortly before Thanksgiving I received a request from a craft show customer asking if I could make some Christmas cards.  As I always like having a project to work on, it was a definite “yes”.  So, I’m working on a batch of about 30 cards.  After getting some details (color preferences, sentiment choices, etc.) I got to work.

For the first few cards I used a My Mind’s Eye Cozy Christmas 6×6 paper pad.  As the flowers on the paper already had a glitter treatment, I kept the embellishments simple and just added the red ribbon bow.

I kept the layout on this card fairly simple as I liked the vintage feel of the cars and wanted that to be the focal point.  For a bit of sparkle I added a few rhinestones on the right side under the car paper.

I thought the plaid paper, which has a glitter treatment on the green stripes, was very pretty so I let the paper do the work.  I added the sentiment with a couple green “flags” and a few pearl embellishments.

Since I had one more sheet of the car paper I thought I’d make another card.  For this one, I used most of the 6×6 sheet as the background and the leftover aqua snowflake paper.  For some contrast I added the red fishtailed banner.  I used 2 stamps to get the height I wanted for the sentiment.

While a 6×6 paper pad is a nice size, not too much not too little paper, I think I must have a short attention span.  To stay “creative”, I switched to some completely different colors and style of paper.  These cards are made using Recollections Jingle Jolly 12×12 paper pad.  To add some sparkle to the pink card, I glittered the pom poms on the top of a few of the snowmen’s hats.

While not the traditional Christmas colors, the stockings have a whimsical Christmas feel.  To play on that, I used the “Holly Jolly” sentiment and slanted the stocking panel.

After making a couple cards with the Jingle Jolly paper, I’m ready to switch back to the Cozy Christmas.  More pictures to come as I work towards the 30 cards.

Pebbles Family Ties paper pad

Pebbles Family Ties paper pad

I decided to take a break from holiday cards and pulled the Pebbles Family Ties 6×6 paper pad out of my “collection”.  This paper pad includes lots of blues and greens (my favorite colors).  Other than a few sheets that didn’t work for cards, I was able to use the entire paper pad and ended up with 31 cards.  Here are a few of my favorites.

A couple sheets of paper were gingham and calico prints which I thought had a country feel.  For these cards I used Operation Write Home sketches #29 and #34.  I stamped the rooster in Tsukineko VersaFine Vintage Sepia ink or Ranger Archival Cobalt ink.  I am loving the rooster stamp and will be making several more cards using it.  To embellish 2 of the cards I added some small light blue and navy blue buttons.

The paper pad also includes a navy polka dot and a blue/white stripe which I thought had a nautical feel.  So, I chose a lighthouse stamp and stamped the image in Ranger Cobalt ink.

There were still several sheets of floral pattern paper.  I used the navy floral and the blue, green and yellow striped paper to create this card using OWH sketch #8.  The sentiment is from Ms. Sparkle & Co and is matted on a scalloped circle, which I thought looked a bit like a flower.  I added 3 blue enamel dots in the upper left corner to break up the stripes.

Many of the prints in this paper pad are very busy and not all of the colors match (especially the blues).  I wasn’t quite sure what to pair up with the plaid paper.  I ended up using some of the yellow gingham and yellow “stripe” papers.  In keeping with the country theme, I used a stamp featuring mason and milk jars.  The stamp is from the Stampin’ Up Country Morning set.  To balance out the stamped image, I added a couple Recollections butterflies.

I was having trouble figuring out how to use the light teal striped paper.  The teal color didn’t really match some of the larger print papers, so I combined it with a small print that looks like cross-stitch “x’s”.  I then dug though my stamps and found the Close to My Heart Cross Stitch Wishes stamp set, which was perfect with this paper.  To pick up on the color of the kraft cardstock used for matting, I added a few Recollections paper flowers.

Here are the rest of the cards created with this paper pad.   The sentiments are from several different stamp sets including Hero Arts, Studio G and Ms. Sparkle & Co.  Embellishments include rhinestones, enamel dots, ribbon, buttons, brads, paper flowers and wood veneer pieces.  I also used several card sketches as inspiration.

Challenge – Favorite Holiday

Challenge – Favorite Holiday

My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving.  I get to spend time with family without the snow, shopping and stress of Christmas.

For the Cards in Envy Favorite Holiday challenge I created this card.

I dug through my stash and pulled out some paper from an old Recollections paper pad (Harvest Delight) that I’d been saving.  I don’t know about you, but I have a ton of paper that is just “too pretty” to use.  I cut the printed papers and matted them with some rust cardstock.  While looking through supplies and trying to decide if I should emboss the sentiment, I found a small jar of bronze micro beads.  These are another of the “too pretty to use” stash items.  I decided to skip the embossing and instead add the micro beads to a few of the leaves on the sentiment.  They added a bit of sparkle without the bulk of sequins or brads.

Challenge – Stripes & Dots

Challenge – Stripes & Dots

I really liked the Double D Stripes and Dots challenge.  I had just started using the Pebbles Family Ties 6×6 paper pad and it included a few sheets of polka dot and stripe pattern papers.  Although the paper is not nautical themed, I thought the blue gave the papers a nautical feel.

The first card uses a very simple layout.  I cut the dots and stripes paper and matted them on navy cardstock.  To separate the papers I wrapped the card with some tan and white bakers twine.  The lighthouse image is stamped using Ranger Archival Ink in Cobalt.  I matted this on navy cardstock and popped up the image with foam tape.  The card seemed a little bare, so I added a couple navy blue enamel dots to the upper right corner.

The second card uses Operation Write Home sketch #34.  I used the same papers, ink and stamp.  The pattern papers and image are all matted on navy cardstock.  The image is popped up with foam tape.  To break up the stripes a bit, I added the small blue flag to the top left corner.
